AAUW Valley Forge Branch Program
SATURDAY, APRIL 12, 2025
EASTTOWN LIBRARY, BERWYN, 10:15 A.M.
Edward (Ned) Hector was a Revolutionary War hero, a free Black man, and a teamster. He was noted for his courage during the retreat at the Battle of Brandywine. Ned was one of the thousands of African-American men who fought on both sides during the Revolution. Noah Lewis, an actor and historical reenactor, portrays Hector. Ned wears the uniform of the Third Pennsylvania Artillery Company to bring his message about the role of African Americans in the Colonial fight for freedom during the American Revolution. He was a teamster/artilleryman under Colonel Proctor who fought in the battles of Brandywine and Germantown. He was commended for his courage in refusing to give up to the enemy his horses, wagon and the armaments he was carrying. He is quoted as saying “The enemy will not have my team. I will save the horses or perish myself.”
Come to hear about Hector’s courage in battle, learn about his uniform and kit, and be inspired by his commitment to the new country and his fight for his own freedom. This is a joint program with Easttown Library. Do bring guests; elementary school children would enjoy this program.
We will also elect officers at this meeting.
